Livestock Guardian Dogs
Meet Nala, Lula, Ben and Moss, our gentle giants and loyal protectors. These Maremma Livestock Guardian Dogs (LGDs) play a vital role here at Farm2Fork, where they guard our turkeys, geese and chickens.
Bred for centuries in Italy to protect sheep from wolves, Maremmas have a natural instinct to bond with and defend their flock. Nala and Lula joined us in 2019 and quickly became invaluable, forming close bonds with our poultry from a young age. In 2025, Ben and Moss joined the team, strengthening the pack and allowing us to grow our pasture-raised poultry enterprises with confidence.
Our approach is unique in the UK, where Maremmas are still a rare sight. By harnessing their protective nature, we can keep our animals safe from foxes without relying on harmful predator control. Instead of upsetting the balance of nature, we work alongside it.
The effectiveness of Maremma dogs has even been proven beyond farming. On Middle Island, Australia, they were used to successfully protect a rare penguin colony from foxes, helping conservation efforts to flourish. Inspired by this, we are proud to use the same natural and sustainable method here at Farm2Fork.
With Nala, Lula, Ben and Moss at work, our birds are free to roam outdoors safely, and you can be sure your food comes from a farm where animal welfare and the environment always come first.
