Our free-range pasture-raised chicken

Our free-range pasture-raised chickens live an outdoor life where they are allowed to mature slowly.

Alongside fresh pasture, their diets are supplemented with organic grain to provide a nutritionally complete and balanced diet, free from antibiotics and GMOs.

Raised outside during the milder weather between April to September, the chickens enjoy life with 24/7 access to our organic pastures, made possible thanks to our large, floor-less mobile field shelters. These protect them from the elements, but still allow access to unlimited organic grasses, herbs and clovers so they can get their fill.

Much like our turkeys, the chickens are kept safe by our trusty Maremma Livestock Guardian Dogs, Lula and Nala, who keep the predators at bay and help to keep our chickens calm and relaxed.

Our chickens peck, scratch and forage for grubs and bugs, which is when they are happiest; and are moved to fresh and clean pasture paddocks each day, as part of our regenerative farming methods, whereby the chickens maintain the health and fertility of the fields as they are moved along.

Brought to us as chicks they are grown for 10 weeks, receiving all the fresh air, exercise and sunshine they want.

Welfare is key for us and we don’t like to rush things. Compare our free-range, organic pasture-raised chicken to a supermarket-bought bird and you’ll see just how much more flavour you get with our slow-growing chickens. The naturally occurring pigments in the grass give the skin on our chickens an authentic yellow colour.

Ordinarily, free-range chickens are kept in static sheds and only a proportion will leave to find pasture. Sometimes these chickens will have to roam across large areas to find any grass at all – unlike the happy, healthy pasture-raised chickens here at Farm2Fork.
