Our free range pasture-raised chickens live an outdoor life where they are allowed to mature slowly, ensuring succulent and tasty meat.
Alongside fresh pasture, their diets are supplemented with organic grain to provide a nutritionally complete and balanced diet, free from antibiotics and GMOs.
Raised outside during the milder weather between April to September, the chickens enjoy life in large, floor-less portable field pens, housing around 75 birds each.
These pens allow the chickens access to unlimited herbs and grasses so they can get their fill, while pecking for grubs and worms, which keeps them from getting bored and ensures they have enough space to roam. The pens are moved to fresh and clean pasture paddocks each day and the chickens fertilise the fields as they are moved along.
Living in small groups like this with plenty of pecking ground ensures our chickens are happy and well entertained.
Brought to us as chicks they are grown for 8 weeks, receiving all the fresh air, exercise and sunshine they want, while remaining totally safe.
Welfare is key for us and we don’t like to rush things. Compare our free range pasture-raised chicken to a supermarket-bought bird and you’ll see just how much more flavour you get with our slow growing chickens. The naturally occurring pigments in the grass gives the skin on our chickens an authentic yellow colour.
Ordinarily, free range chickens are kept in static sheds and only a proportion will leave to find pasture. Sometimes these chickens will have to roam across large areas to find any grass at all – unlike the happy, well-fed chickens here at Farm2Fork.
